Elmwood is seeking Twelve (12) Support Worker Assistant Summer Students to assist in our Community Homes over the summer months. This in-scope position will report to the Community Home Coordinator, and is responsible for the ongoing support, health and safety of individuals living with intellectual disabilities. The Support Worker Assistant Summer Students will provide resident support/care in a manner that meets the individual’s unique needs in their homes. They will follow all organization policies/practices and the direction of their supervisor, or their supervisors designate. Support Worker Assistant Summer Students are required to work as part of a team.
Role Responsibilities:
- Consistently provide a high standard of support/care for the residents in accordance with Elmwood’s policies, procedures, and practices; in keeping with Elmwood Residences Inc. philosophies; and as directed by their supervisor or their supervisors designate.
- Follow established Resident Support Plans and Community Home Routines.
- Provide personal care and/or assistance to each resident in the areas of personal hygiene that include but are not limited to washing/bathing, dressing, hair care, toileting, eating etc.
- Provide opportunities for residents to develop new skills and assist each individual to try to maintain current level of functioning based on individual goals.
- Respond effectively in emergency situations and in all incidents such as aggression/conflict, seizures, choking, missing residents, illness and injury etc.
- Prepare and serve appetizing and nutritious meals to the residents in accordance with stated menu policy/procedures and resident preference.
- Assist with bi-weekly grocery ordering based on provided menus and following policies/procedures/practices about the purchase of additional grocery items outside of the ordering process.
- Interact with residents in a supportive and respectful way.
- Offer an enriched environment that provides optimal opportunities for learning and growth through social, recreational, sensory, and spiritual activities.
- Assist residents to access community resources.
- Report all immediate concerns and needs of the residents to the Community Home Coordinator.
- Maintain resident records/files/progress notes according to company policy.
- Complete incident reports as per policy and procedure.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 and/or equivalent qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Ability to understand and follow written direction and/or direction provided verbally over the phone
- Flexibility, patience, and the ability to cope with unpredictable or aggressive behaviors
- Demonstrate qualities of trust, respect, and empathy
- Self-directed with demonstrated sound judgment and the ability to independently problem solve
- Possess sufficient experience to satisfactorily perform assigned tasks
- Must provide a criminal record check at point of hire and upon request
- Disability Support Worker Certificate, Continuing Care Assistant, or other related education preferred
- Experience in providing personal care
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities
- Computer skills
This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant and will commence from June 2023 until end of August 2023 and works 40 hours per week including some evenings and weekends. The starting salary for this role is $15.00/hour.
